Uhuru Dance Band was formed under the leadership of Stan Plange. The band was

formed in the late Sixties after breaking away from the mother band of Broadway Dance Band. This was after their return from performance in Kenya during the Independence of that country and under the leadership of Jomo Kenyata. The word Uhuru means Freedom in Kenya. The Band had great men like Joe Mensah, Eddy Ntre, Charlotte Dada to mention a few. Uhuru was a Twenty – Four Piece Band. They toured almost all parts of West Africa and were nearly trapped in Port Harcourt during the early part of the Nigerian civil war. They were very popular at the Havanah Dance events organized by our various universities at that time. Uhuru Dance Band produced many hit numbers such as 􀁂Skin Pain, Time for Highlife, Pretty Mary, Grazing in the grass, etc.
