Ernest Olatunde Thomas a.k.a. TundeNightingale was born on December 12, 1922, into the family of Adetoun and Samuel Oladele Thomas. He attended C.M.S Grammar School Bariga. Tunde was likened to the bird called ” Nightingale” because of his unique and sonorous singing voice. He started his musical career in the early 40s as a juju musician. He termed his brand of music as “Owambe” a sonorous voice, perfect rendition, and a captivating personality were all embodied in the singing bird. He was an extraordinary musician who combined an indefatigable taste and sensitive artistic judgment. He composed his own tunes and lyrics and one can immediately sense the sparkle and humor in his work. As a result of these factors, Tunde became a force to be reckoned with in the hustling music circle in the ’50s and ’70s. No society party in Lagos was complete without the Nightingale. In 1968, he was contracted for a tour in Europe for a period of 4 months and Tunde created quite a sensation during his stay. Wherever he and his band played the halls were packed to capacity. He composed several hits like Na Poor A Poor, My Juju, etc. Tunde died in 1981
