Eddie Quansah Ralph started his career in Ghana where he learned to play the guitar, not as a professional but as an instrument of pleasure. He was involved in the gold mining business but was keenly interested in music especially in guitar. In those early days of the 40s and 50s, Gold Coast, now Ghana, was the home of palm

wine guitar with fire strokes by E. K. Yame, Akwaboa, Kwaa Men, etc. after his return from Ghana, Amarabem who was already consolidated and full of musical ideas had no problem in filling the space Rex Jim Lawson had for his band.

He was a great blessing to Rex Lawson’s Mayors Band at that time. He introduced the palm wine guitar tradition to the band both as elements of solo work and the structuring of melodic progressions for the ensemble. The popular Jolly Papa was composed by Ralph for the band. Ralph is a composer, a guitarist. A singer with great feelings and emotion. He later established the Peacocks Band and dished out popular tunes such as Eddie Quansah used for the television series Masquerade􀁈. Ralph Amarabem who became blind towards the end of his musical career in his mid-fifties, was fully committed to the art and remains one of Nigeria’s Musical Heroes.
