Please remember me. Please remember me. For I have delighted many troubled hearts with songs, songs, songs. Like the Nightingales, I have just sung to bring you joy. Please remember me, oh won’t you?

Please forget me not, please forget me not. I have sailed many oceans and I have had a few storms. I have crossed many dangerous rivers but made them all to the end, I have been into many deep waters, wo woo but I came up, came up to stay.

The above was quoted as a preamble in one of his numerous performances at the Ambassador Hotel Yaba in 1961. The legendary Joe Mensah formed his band The African Stars. Then changed its name to The African Beats Band. This legend was born and he gained a huge Followership throughout the world when he rearranged his popular hit Bosue or Bonsue  (depending on your choice of spelling) into an evergreen masterpiece. Joe’s music is powerful and effective and grows on you. It is a blend of influences transforming the popular traditional music into a world-beat form digestible by everybody. Added to his mastery of the music, his velvet voice, Joe has a charismatic and pleasant personality. Mensah contributed immensely to the height reached by many bands such as Broadway Dance Band of Ghana, Star Gazers, and most importantly Chief Billy Friday & His Ambassador Dance Beats. Joe as a Ghanaian had many intimate friends from other Countries such as Manu Dibango, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Ebenezer Obey, and others.

Apart from the immortal number Bosue some of his other hits are Rokpokpo, Old Friends and New Loves, Meye Ye Wodze.
