Etubom Rex Williams started performing at Dayspring Hotel in Enugu, the band was known as the Dayspring Hotel Band and was led by J. J. Shaw. Williams was on the trumpet, an instrument that he cultivated a liking for in the Salvation Army Church in Etinan, Akwa Ibom State where he was born. Williams was recruited to lead a band that served the leisure interest of workers of the electricity company at Kainji Dam. At the outbreak of the Nigeria Civil War, he returned to Calabar to lead a band at the famous Luna Nite Club. He formed his own band, Etubom Rex Williams and the Nigerian Artists in 1972. Before this time, an admirer who watched his performance in Enugu had invited him to Lagos to play at the popular, Cookats Inn, Ebute Metta. Dr. Victor Olaiya later offered him the position of a bandleader in his Second Set. Williams at various times played with and led the Day Spring Hotel Band in Enugu, the Coolcat Band, Dr. Victor Olaiya s Second Set, and the Luna Nite Club Band. In a career that has spanned over four decades, he has recorded over 100 albums. Some of his favorite songs include Ubok Aka Inua, Yak NkebeEno, Ebono Kima, Nwop Special, and Akpai Song. His contemporaries in music include Inyang Henshaw, Kingsley Burster Bassey, Rex Lawson, and Victor Uwaifo.
