Today the figure of Ebenezer Olasupo Fabiyipopularly called “Commander EbenezerObey”, looms high on an unassailable position of prominence in Nigeria music. Ebenezer Obey was born on the 3rd of April 1942 at Idogo, a small town in Ogun State to Nathaniel and Abigael, both Abeokuta indigenes. His father was both a carpenter and a farmer while his mother was a trader. However for someone of Obey’s dedication and hard work, fame and success were only destined to be in a matter of time, no matter the line he chose to tow. He started his journey in search of stardom way back at Idogo when he played at the local church and for the school band. In 1957, he formed the Ifelodun Members Orchestra, while he was a student at the Methodist Secondary Modern School, Abeokuta. He moved to Lagos in 1958 to join Fatai Rotting Dollar Band.
In 1963, fortune smiled on him and he formed his band “Ebenezer Obey and His International Brothers”. It was this group that later metamorphosed into the popular inter-reformers band in 1964. Over the past four decades, he has released over 90 singles and LPs scoring over 12 gold discs and one platinum (Board Members). This achievement remains today the target of ambitious rising musicians and a living testimony of his popularity and good music. Indeed his music had taken
him to far countries all over the world like Asia, Europe, and the U.S.A., etc. After his first LP “Ewa wo ohun oju ri”, released in 1968, Obey had consecutively released many other tunes such as ” Immortality”, “My Vision”, “Ketekete”, “Board Members”, “Olomi gbo temi”, “Aimo asiko” and several others. What makes his music tick of course are his modern electronic innovations, coupled with his mastery at thrilling percussions. While his songs always carry a strong underlay of the philosophical message, Obey’s sweet lyrics remain an all-time party favorite, captivating and danceable. Obey’s wise observations about life make his music an all-time favorite of the not too young listeners whose taste and choice of music demand quality and sense instead of slang and noise. His miliki music like good wine features so regularly on both radio and television programs in the country.
Soft-spoken Obey, a man close to God, is a born-again Christian who is totally committed to giving God the better part of his life.
